Maternal & Child Health

As a registered Maternal and Child Health nurse Andrea is able to provide an on-going service following the birth of your baby up to school age. The early days can be confusing and having a strong support base is important. Parents are welcome to make an appointment any time an issue arises as well as the key visits mentioned below.





These visits will include
• breast feeding support – giving your baby the best start in life is important and the best way is by breast feeding. It's not always easy in the beginning but with the right support the problems are usually short-lived and then it becomes enjoyable. Getting help as soon as possible can make all the difference and enable you to keep going when you might otherwise be tempted to give up.
• weighing and measuring your baby. While weight gain is only one indicator of a healthy growing baby, parents and families like to know how much the baby is gaining and how much they are growing.
• completion of the developmental assessment is your child's health record. If you look in your child's blue book you will see "key visits" at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years and 4 years. This allows for detection of any areas where your child may benefit from early intervention to help them reach their milestones.
• advice on sleep and settling. This can be the most frustrating thing for many parents and the solutions are often easy to find with the right advice. By listening to parent's individual stories and with 25 years experience can assist parents' to set realistic, age appropriate goals and work towards improving their child's sleep pattern.
• positive parenting - all parents would like to have a positive relationship with their children but sometimes before you know it children are behaving in a way that is frustrating both us and them. Learning new skills and ways to approach this can make all the difference.
